SGPA full form is Semester Grade Point Average. It is a numerical representation of a student's academic performance in a single semester. SGPA is calculated as the weighted average of grade points earned in all subjects during that semester, where each subject's grade point is weighted by its credit hours.
SGPA is the semester-level equivalent of CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average). While SGPA tracks your performance for one term, your CGPA is the running average of all your SGPAs — the number that ultimately appears on your degree certificate.
For example, if you have 5 subjects with 4 credits each and earn grade points of 9, 8, 10, 7, and 8 respectively:
SGPA gives you a clear snapshot of how you performed in each semester, helping you identify trends, track improvement, and focus on weak areas before they drag down your overall CGPA. Many scholarships, exchange programmes, and academic honours consider semester-level SGPA in addition to overall CGPA.
Converting SGPA to percentage depends on your university. Here are all the officially recognised formulas used across Indian universities and beyond:
Recommended by UGC and used by many central universities. 8.0 SGPA → 72.5%
AKTU, SPPU, SRM, GGSIPU, DTU, BHU, Amity, RTU, KL, and most AICTE-affiliated colleges. 8.0 SGPA → 76%
Officially mandated by VTU Belgaum and Anna University Chennai. 8.0 SGPA → 72%
Unique weighted formula. 8.0 SGPA → 67.8%
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. 8.0 SGPA → 72.5%
Gujarat Tech University and Biju Patnaik University. 8.0 SGPA → 75%

You scored 8.4 SGPA at an AKTU-affiliated college. Select "AKTU (× 9.5)" from the dropdown, type 8.4 → Percentage = 79.8%, Grade = A (Excellent), 4.0 GPA = 3.36.
| Subject | Credits | Grade Point | Weighted (GP × C) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Data Structures | 4 | 9 (A+) | 36 |
| Mathematics III | 3 | 8 (A) | 24 |
| Operating Systems | 4 | 10 (O) | 40 |
| Communication Skills | 2 | 7 (B+) | 14 |
| DSP Lab | 2 | 9 (A+) | 18 |
| Total | 15 | — | 132 |
SGPA = 132 ÷ 15 = 8.80
Percentage (Standard) = (8.80 × 10) − 7.5 = 80.5% — First Class with Distinction
Using × 9.5: 8.80 × 9.5 = 83.6% | Using VTU ×9.0: 8.80 × 9.0 = 79.2%
A VTU student scores SGPA of 7.6 in Semester 4.
On standard formula: (7.6 × 10) − 7.5 = 68.5% (nearly the same here).
Mumbai University student with 8.2 SGPA:
Note: Mumbai University's formula intentionally produces lower percentages than other formulas — this is by design and is used for internal ranking.

Both SGPA and CGPA are grade point averages on the same scale, but they measure different things. Understanding the difference is critical for academic planning and career applications.

Gujarat Technological University: (SGPA − 0.5) × 10. 8.0 SGPA = 75%.
Most campus recruiters use your current CGPA (built from SGPAs) as a first-round filter. Common cutoffs: 7.5 CGPA for most IT companies, 8.0+ for product companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon. A consistent SGPA of 8.0+ throughout your degree is the most reliable way to stay placement-eligible.
For studying abroad, your CGPA (expressed as a GPA on a 4.0 scale) is evaluated. US universities typically expect 3.0+ GPA (7.5+ CGPA on Indian scale) for master's admission. Top programmes prefer 3.5+ (8.75+ CGPA). Strong SGPAs in the final two years carry extra weight since they reflect recent, advanced-level performance.
Many PSUs (BHEL, NTPC, ONGC, HPCL) have a minimum 60% aggregate criterion, which maps to roughly 6.3 CGPA on the standard formula. Some require 65% (6.84 CGPA). Converting your SGPA to percentage correctly matters for eligibility screening.
Merit scholarships, exchange programmes (Erasmus+, DAAD, Fulbright), and academic honours typically require a minimum GPA/CGPA. Knowing your semester percentage helps you compare against application cutoffs accurately.
Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5 (UGC recommended).Percentage = SGPA × 9.5 (AKTU, SPPU, SRM, GGSIPU, DTU, etc.).Percentage = SGPA × 9.0.Percentage = (SGPA × 7.1) + 11.CGPA = Average of all SGPAs across all semesters.
